Home Security Information
Install dead
bolt locks in your doors and use them. Avoid locks that can be
unlocked by breaking a window to reach them.
Make
sure outside doors are solid 1-3/4 inch metal or wood, and fit
tightly in their frame. Hinges should be installed facing the
interior of the home.
Secure
sliding-glass doors with commercial locks and a sturdy wooden
dowel (broomstick) in the track or install a nail/screw through a
hole drilled in the sliding door frame.
Lock
double hung windows by sliding a nail through a hole drilled at a
downward angle in each top corner of the inside sash and part way
through the outside sash, or buy window key locks at a hardware
store.
If you
live in an isolated or sparsely populated area, investigate the
benefits of an alarm system.
Outside Home Safety
Make
sure your yard, entranceways, and porches are well lit. Lights
are very important in deterring criminals
Trim
shrubbery that may hide or obstruct the view of windows and doors.
Never
hide keys around the exterior of your home such as mailboxes,
doormats, etc. Give a key to a trusted neighbor, friend or
relative in case you are ever locked out.
Display
your house number clearly so emergency personnel can find it
quickly.
Home Safety while Away
When you
plan to take a trip for more than a day, inform a neighbor, friend
or family member. You can also inform your local law enforcement
agency and request a short-term residential check.
When
away at night set light and radio timers to give the appearance
your residence is occupied.
If
you’re going away for a few days have someone pick up your mail or
newspapers, or have delivery stopped until you return.
Make
sure all doors, and windows are locked, and set your security
alarm (if applicable)
