The Community Patrol Division is tasked with being the first responders to most criminal activity within the unincorporated portions of Pitt County and the municipalities without a police department. These deputies are typically in marked patrol vehicles and are assigned to a particular section of the county to patrol.  Duties include answering calls for service from the public which could range anywhere from routine calls to emergencies.  Deputies are also responsible for the service of criminal and civil papers within their assigned sections.  There are currently eight patrol sections within the county.  Each shift has a deputy assigned to patrol each of the sections.  The shift is supervised by a sergeant who provides backup and guidance to each of the deputies.  The county is also divided into three districts, each of which is supervised by a captain.  A district consists of 2-3 of the patrol sections.

Another assignment within the community patrol division is that of a property crimes detective.  The detectives investigate and follow up on property crimes such as burglaries, industrial break-ins, and arson.

The domestic violence unit is also within the community patrol division.  This unit is tasked with the  investigation and follow-up of crimes involving assaults and disputes of a domestic nature.  This unit consists of four uniformed deputies and a sergeant.  Each of the deputies is assigned to a patrol shift in order to provide round the clock coverage for the county.

There are two additional sergeants within the community patrol division each with different duties.  The first is a relief sergeant that serves as a backup in case a shift sergeant is not available.  His duties also include the coordination and scheduling of special events such as the fair, ECU ballgames, funeral escorts, etc.  He is also responsible for scheduling and supervision of the off-duty contract assignments for the entire agency.

The second sergeant is our agency training sergeant.  His duties include the scheduling, coordination, and implementation of training within the entire agency.  He is also responsible for the issuance of weapons and ammunition.

The community patrol division also assigns two deputies to provide security services to the county office building and two deputies for the Pitt Greenville airport.
