The Court Security Services
Section
With eleven full time and additional
part time personnel the Court Security
Services Section, Under direction of the
Community Operations Division,
is Charged with insuring the safety of the citizenry, officers of
the court, and those persons that are in its custody that enter to
conduct business within the Pitt County Courthouse. This is
accomplished by providing Building security, and serving as
bailiffs for both the District and Superior Courts.
These duties
include:

Preparing the courtroom for
session,
·
Assisting and providing
security for the judiciary and officers of the court
·
Opening, recessing and
adjourning every court session; calling out for defendants
and subpoenaed witnesses,
·
Coordinating and accompanying
pre-trial detainees as well as prisoners to and
from court,
·
Maintains order in the
courthouse as well as in each of the courtrooms,
·
Enforces all orders of the
court,
·
Assists the clerk of court
with the movement of trial evidence, and documents,
·
Sequesters and insures the
comfort and integrity of the jury,
·
Services all criminal and
civil process emanating from the court including the
execution of lawful writs and court orders.
·
Transports pre-trial detainees
to out of county detention centers, prisoners to
correctional facilities, mental commitments as well as pre-trial
detainees for
medical purposes, as necessary, throughout the state.
In its efforts to provide a safer
environment for the general public, the Pitt County Sheriff's
Office has placed a x-ray screening system as well as a walk
through metal detector at the public entrance leading into the
courtrooms. These were installed to deter the bringing in of
weapons and/or other hazardous items into the courtroom.
The Court Security Services Section is also
charged with providing security for personnel and the visiting
public at the various Pitt County Government office buildings.
Since the terrorist attacks on September 11th the Court
Security Services Section has also been tasked to coordinate with
the National Guard and the Greenville Police Department to provide
Security and assist with at least one of the pre-flight loading of
passengers at the Pitt-Greenville Airport.
Court security is not limited to the Pitt County Courthouse. Twice
weekly Court is held in the towns of
Ayden and Farmville.
Under certain conditions court is also held at the
Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
First Appearance hearings are held Monday through Friday at the
Pitt County Detention Center
for those persons that are unable to make bond.
