PROJECT
D.A.R.E.: AN OVERVIEW
Project
D.A.R.E. ( Drug Abuse Resistance Education) is a unique drug
prevention education program designed to equip elementary school
children with skills for resisting peer pressure to experiment
with alcohol and other drugs.
Los Angles Police Department founded
the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program in 1983.
The program was originally based on a 17-week curriculum to help
children develop the necessary decision-making skills needed to
resist drugs. The program was
implemented by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
and the North Carolina Department of Justice in 1986.
D.A.R.E. is a collaborative effort
project that was designed
by certified law enforcement officers, educators, parents
and community residents Its
overall aim
is to offer an educational program in the classroom to
prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and
youths. A primary goal of the program is to help young people
realize the dangers of experimenting with alcohol, tobacco,
marijuana, inhalants and other dangerous drugs,
learn strategies for not using, and thus reduce their use and
abuse. In an effort to build on positive image making and rapport
building between law enforcement officers and youths, sworn
officers not only work in partnership with teachers in the school
system, but the officers are actually responsible for the delivery
of the D.A.R.E. curricula.
The D.A.R.E. programs
were initiated in Pitt County on December 16th, 1988
with five officers attending training in Raleigh NC. The listed
officers attended and graduated from the fourth D.A.R.E. training
section held in the state of NC.
