No longer can we associate abuse with only the criminal element of our society. Abuse of any drug or alcohol victimizes society as a whole. Increased instances of violent crime, thefts, vandalism, and traffic accidents involving adults and juveniles can be attributed to drugs and alcohol. The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office is committed to reducing the demand side of drug use through the D.A.R.E. Program, and is proud of the popularity of the program. D.A.R.E. offers a positive approach of informing students and the community of anti-drug behavior. By teaching such topics as self-esteem, alternatives to drug use, peer pressure, consequences of using drugs, support systems, role models, and several others, the children ability to say not to drugs will be enhanced.
